    Elementary CanSkate Program

    Did you know?
CanSkate is Canada's only national learn-to-skate program. It was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive and sequential manner.
The ACTIVE AT SCHOOL initiative is a multi-year, multi-million dollar grassroots program focused on reversing the staggering trend of inactivity amongst Canadian children and youth. As a partner organization, Skate Canada shares the goals of ACTIVE AT SCHOOL, which include ensuring that Canadian children receive one hour of quality physical activity and education before, during or after school every single day.

"By harnessing the power of our partners, we can work together to get kids active for an hour a day at school."

The Northern BC Centre for Skating is now in its fourth year of offering the Elementary CanSkate program to Heather Park Elementary School. The program has proven to be positive on so many levels for the children and the school. Due to the popularity and success of the program, the Centre is now exploring the option of opening it up to more schools in the Prince George area.

    How does it work?
    1. Ice Booking
Your school books the ice directly with Prince George Public Skating Services: pgpublicskating@gmail.com
    • an 8 week minimum program length is recommended
    • inform Prince George Public Skating Services that you would like a 45min session, 1 day per week

    2. Complete the Elementary CanSkate Application
After your ice is booked you will be required to fill in the application below. This will ensure your session is staffed appropriately.
    • Note: a maximum of 5 schools will be accepted into the 2014/2015 program.
    • Each CanSkate program is limited to 60 skaters at a time. More students will require you to book more than one session. Under these circumstances, the Centre recommends that you book your sessions back to back.

    What are the fees?
    1. Ice
    • Public Schools: ice rental fees will not be charged
    • Private Schools: ice rental fees will be charged to private schools

    2. Coaching Fees
Skate Canada's program delivery standards include an instruction ratio of 1 coach to every 10 students for optimal learning. The Centre will staff 4 coaches on each Elementary CanSkate session, provided that school staff, parents or volunteers are provided. NCCP Certified Professional Coaching Staff rates are as follows:
    • Junior Coaches: $15/hr - two will work each session
    • Director Coaches: $44/hr - two will work each session

    3. Insurance/Skate Canada Membership
    • $40 per participant, payable once per year

Example: 50 students for a 3 month period (approximately 10 sessions)
Total cost would be $1300 + Skate Canada insurance, membership and administration fee of $40 per student
The school will pay $66 for ea student, which amounts to $6.60 per session

    4. Skate/Helmet Rentals
    • Rentals for private or SD57 schools can be arranged for a nominal fee through Prince George Public Skating Services
